You should buy and read Faith Acts: A Provocative Call to Live What You Believe.
I’m not talking about the fact that I want you to buy the book Dillon and I wrote, but I think you actually should buy the book and then read it and then do something more with your faith that just knowing about it.
That’s what Faith Acts is really about; doing what the Bible says.
We have this strange culture that has emerged in the West that favors knowledge over action. We reward people who know more than what they necessarily do.
In 2014 and 2016 Chattanooga was named the most Bible-minded city in the United States by a Barna and American Bible Society survey that questions whether people read their Bible during the week and believe in the accuracy of what the Bible teaches. It should follow, then, that Chattanooga, a two-time winner of this title, should be breaking out in revival and seeing unprecedented helping of the poor, the widows, and the orphans. Instead, Chattanooga sees continued increases in poverty, homelessness, and homicides each year despite continued efforts by local organizations and government to battle these trends.
Why is the most Bible-minded city struggling? As St. James warned, we have been deceiving ourselves that listening to the word is enough. We read our Bible (hear the word) and believe it is true and then we stop. We don’t do anything with the information we receive.
We have information, but we lack application.
Dillon and I address this issue specifically in Faith Acts. We talk about the disparaging reality of Chattanooga’s poverty and crime. We recount our personal experiences working with those in need in our area because we believe that the Bible isn’t just something to know, but we should also do what it says.
When you sit down to read Faith Acts, you will be encouraged to get out of the pews and go into the projects. You’ll want to leave your house to help those who are homeless. You’ll discover that the comfort of your church building isn’t the only place where worship can occur. When you read Faith Acts, you will hear the word and do what it says.
